Light browning and foxing in places, offsetting to margins of preliminaries and endleaves. Early owner signature (of Charles Marsh - FOUNDER of AMERICAN COLONIZATION SOCIETY, MOC and member in Washington's cabinet) . A nice set in a handsome binding. First edition. With a subscriber list that includes James Madison, Aaron Burr, James Kent, Alexander Dallas, William Rawle, Edward Livingston and other notables. "The first essay of its kind in America" (Sabin). Swift's System displays "a thoughtful philosophy of government as well as a thorough presentation of the constitutional and working government of the state" (Dictionary of American Biography IX:250. "More than a hundred years later it was still cited by Connecticut courts."
